First Aid Care
As
a cat owner there are a few simple things you can do to ensure your
feline's health in the event of an emergency.
Maintain a Feline First Aid kit that everyone in the household
knows how to use, be aware of the potential dangers, and know
the signs of possible poisoning.
Should your cat ingest any of the items below or exhibit any of the
following signs, seek veterinary attention immediately.
Household products:
• Aspirin or acetaminophen or any other medication not
prescribed for your cat
• An overdose of a medication prescribed for your cat
• Rodent bait (warfarin)
• Any pesticides
• Antifreeze
Signs of possible poisoning:
• Excessive salivation
• Excessive vomiting and/or diarrhea
• Seizures/Convulsions
• Paralysis
• Coma
Common poisonous plants:
• Poinsettia
• Mistletoe
• Morning Glory
• Rhododendron
• Onion
• Tobacco
FELINE FIRST AID
KIT
A basic first aid kit for
your cat should contain the following:
- Syrup of Ipecac (consult your
veterinarian prior to administration)
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Eye Wash/Saline Solution
- Tweezers
- Rectal or Ear Thermometer
- Gauze pads and bandaging
- Non-stick gauze (Telfa) pads
- A blanket or towel
- Telephone Numbers for your
Veterinarian
- Telephone number for the
- A local poison control agency
Periodically inventory your
first aid kit to ensure that all items are current
Be aware that your cat may not be a willing patient.
Remain calm and be gentle.
Always call your veterinarian as soon as possible in an
emergency situation and before administering any medical aid.
